Every Tuesday after school about 50 boys and girls from classes 3-6 have football training with Múinteoir Aonghus Ó Neachtain. The boys compete in the county competitions against schools and the girls compete in the blitz competitions at the end of the year. The girls and boys also participate in the ‘mini 7’s’ competition locally. At the beginning of this school year the boys team won the Damian Gannon memorial cup. This was a competition organised by the four neighbouring schools.
Athletics is very strong in the school also. Girls and boys participate in the cross country race at the beginning of the year and in the City sports at the end of the year. Since 1997 Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh has had both boys and girls Olympic Handball teams U/11 and U/13. The boys have training at lunchtime with múinteoir Aonghus and the girls train after school on Mondays with múinteoir Máire de Brún. Although Olympic Handball is a relatively new game to Galway both our boy and girls have enjoyed great wins over the years. The boys team won the county final in 2003 and the girls team have won the Galway County finals in 2003, 2005 and 2006.
